ABSTRACT: The relationship between the heat fluxes in the ocean-atmosphere interface, the water masses distribution e the phytoplankton composition was determined based on data collected during the ACEx/SIMTECO cruise, which was realized along the southern Brazilian coast. A marked spatial variability was observed in the region, straightly related with the distribution of the water masses within the region. Throughout the region it was observed heat lose from the ocean to the atmosphere, and th highest values were associated with the presence of tropical waters, which presented low phytoplankton biomass, dominated by cyanobacteria and prochlorophytes. On the other hand, coastal waters under the influence of the Río de La Plata plume exhibited less intense heat fluxes with greater phytoplankton biomass, which was dominated by diatoms, with contributions of prasinophytes and dinoflagellates. Despite the CO2 data have not been analyzed yet, the region can exert great importance on the oceans CO2 absorption, due to high biomass found in towards the coast.
